TurboTax's New SnapTax App Fills And Files 1040EZ Returns, Using iPhone Camera To Record W-2 Data
Would you like to use your Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone or Android smartphone to file your 2010 state and federal income tax returns? There’s an app for that.
Well at least there’s one if you’re filing the 1040EZ short form. Turbo Tax has designed a variant of its SnapTax software for Android and iOS smartphone operating systems that permits taxpayers to use their iPhones or smartphones to fill out and file 1040EZ income tax forms with the Internal Revenue Service.
This free income tax software can be downloaded at turbotax.intuit.com/snaptax/mobile/ for Android smartphones, or itunes.apple.com/us/app/turbotax-snaptax/id406364213?mt=8 for iPhones. Though the app itself is free, once you’ve filled out your return and approved it, TurboTax charges $14.99 to actually file the return with the IRS.
To begin the process with SnapTax, you first take photographs of your W-2 forms using your iPhone’s camera. The SnapTax software “reads” the data on the paperwork using optical character recognition and then inserts it into the relevant forms. Next, SnapTax asks you a few essential questions, allows you to examine and approve the finished forms yourself, and file your return with the IRS electronically. Throughout the process, SnapTax displays a running total of your refund, the same way the desktop version of the app does.
The taxpayers who are eligible to use the simple 1040EZ form, and thus the SnapTax app, are those taxpayers who have no dependents, who have earned under $100,000 during 2010 and have claimed the standard deduction.
Comments about the release of the new app, on TurboTax’s website, have been very favorable.
